A crucial moment in any motorsport season is when the new cars are revealed and driven for the first time by the F1 teams. After months of design work and virtual simulations, it is the day that the teams finally find out whether they’ve built a potential title winner or are in for the fight of their lives towards F1 glory!
From the 7th to the 10th of March, Circuit de Barcelona hosted a round of testing before the official F1 season starts at the Australian Grand Prix on March 26th. Caroline, from our Travel Department Sales Team in Arnotts, and I were lucky enough to bag an invite for this exclusive VIP event!
This testing day provided the perfect opportunity for us to get up close to all of the action on the circuit. We started the day viewing the circuit from the hospitality box, with the pit lanes directly underneath, allowing us to see the cars as they came back to the mechanics following their test laps. Admittedly, I was not a massive F1 fan before travelling to the circuit, but once I heard the roar of the engines on the test day, I was hooked! The atmosphere as the cars wiz past you at unimaginable speed is electrifying.
Next it was time for a walk through the Paddocks, which gave us a chance to see first-hand what goes on behind the scenes, including the impressive F1 motor homes. In the early 1970s, the first F1 motor home was a makeshift camper trailer. Today the motor homes have evolved into elaborate travelling abodes, often with several stories, each with its own unique style. It was in the Paddocks that we were lucky enough to catch glimpses of Daniel Ricciardo & Carlos Sainz. We also got to see the cutest member of the Mercedes F1 team, Roscoe the bulldog! He was perched by his owner, Lewis Hamilton, as he conducted interviews with the media.
From the Paddocks, we went on a guided mini bus tour around the track, stopping at some awesome spots to see how the cars handled the corners and curves of the circuit at death defying speeds. While I hope the photos I took on the day do it justice, F1 racing really is something that you need to experience with your own eyes (and ears!)
With pre-season testing now over, it is time for the F1 teams to analyse the performances of the cars and make their final preparations for the first race date of the year.
