Holiday highlights

Reykjavík

The world’s northernmost capital, with a population of 120,000, is home to sites such as The Pearl visitor centre with its Saga Museum, Hallgrímskirkja Church, Reykjavík Harbour, Reykjavík 101 Centre and Solfar Viking Ship Sculpture.  Known as the ‘Little city with the big heart’, Reykjavík can be easily explored in foot. There’s a lively café-culture and thriving art and music scenes, while in the various city museums, Iceland’s culture and history is preserved and displayed.

Hallgrímskirkja Church

Hallgrímskirkja church is Reykjavík's main landmark and its tower can be seen from almost everywhere in the city. It was designed by the late Guðjón Samuel in 1937, who was often inspired in his endeavours by the fascinating shapes and forms created when lava cools into basalt rock. The church features, most notably, a gargantuan pipe organ designed and constructed by the German organ builder Johannes Klais of Bonn. Standing directly in front of the church, and predating it by 15 years, is a fine statue of Leifur Eiriksson (c. 970 – c. 1020) – the first European to discover America.

Reykjavík Old Harbour

Apart from it being a beautiful place to walk with stunning views across the bay to Mount Esja, the Old Harbour area is where the majority of marine activities, such as whale watching and puffin tours are concentrated; it's also home to the excellent Víkin Maritime Museum and the Icelandair Hotel Reykjavík Marina. The numerous new businesses being established, offering everything from scooter rides to the city's best dark-roasted coffee, are testament to the wonderful community spirit responsible for generating the success of the Old Harbour and re-establishing it as a new vibrant quarter of Reykjavík City.

Optional Excusrion to The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon, a man-made geothermal spa, is located in a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The geothermal water originates 2,000 metres below the surface, where freshwater and seawater combine at extreme temperatures. It is then harnessed via drilling holes at a nearby geothermal power plant, to create electricity and hot water. On its way to the surface, the water picks up silica and minerals, before emerging at a soothing 38°C, perfect for a relaxing and re-energising bathe.
