The Rila Monastery was founded in the 10th century and it's also known as the Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila. It's the largest Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria and is the country's most famous tourist attraction; it's even depicted on one of their banknotes.

Day 1 - Arrive to Bulgaria

Upon arrival into Sofia, Bulgaria you will be met at the airport by our local representative and transferred to your hotel in Plovdiv, the second city of Bulgaria. (approx. 2 hrs) Settle into your hotel and enjoy a meal with your fellow travellers tonight.

Day 2 – City tour of Plovdiv

This morning enjoy a walking tour of Plovdiv. A former Greek and Roman settlement, Plovdiv is one of Europe’s oldest continually inhabited cities. Step back in time with a guided walking tour and see sights such as the Roman forum of Philippopolis, the Roman theatre and the cobblestoned streets where atmospheric Orthodox churches lie beside Ottoman period mosques.

Day 4- Kazanlak

Kazanlak

Today head towards Bulgaria’s valley of the Roses and the city of Kazanlak, centre of Bulgaria’s rose oil industry. See how rose oil is produced and how it affects the region with an included visit to the ethnographic museum. Afterwards visit a brilliantly frescoed, replica of a 4th-century-BC tomb of a Thracian ruler. The original, right beside the replica, was discovered in 1944 during construction of a bomb shelter and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Day 5 - Koprivshtitsa & Sofia

Koprivshtitsa & Sofia

Leave Plovdiv behind today and travel to Bulgaria’s capital Sofia, where you will stay for the remainder of your holiday. On the way, stop in the town of Koprivshtitsa, known for its authentic Bulgarian architecture and ties to Bulgarian folklore. Visit two traditional houses from the 1800s before continuing to Sofia where you will spend the next three nights.

Day 6 - Sofia

Your time in Sofia begins with a walking tour of the Bulgarian capital, which will include the ornately decorated Orthodox Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the largest in Bulgaria. Other highlights include the St. George Rotunda, the ancient Roman ruins of the city of Serdika, St. Sofia Basilica which is one of the oldest churches of South Eastern Europe, and many of the major architectural gems of Sofia, such as the National Theatre. There will be free time to walk around and admire the architecture and charming fountains that are nestled within the streets of the historic centre.

The afternoon will be free to spend at your own pace exploring this fantastic city and try one of the hundreds of traditional restaurants dotted around Sofia.

Day 7- Rila Monastery & Boyana Church

The most famous Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria, the Rila Monastery has been a spiritual centre for over 1000 years. Visit the church with its spectacular bright yellow domes and black and white striped arches, decorated with ornate frescoes as well as its adjoining museum outlining the history of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Boyana Church

Upon return back to Sofia you will visit Boyana Church, another one of the nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Bulgaria. Inside, its frescoes from the 13th century are highly regarded works of Eastern Christian art and attract visitors from all over the world. Built in the 10th century, the church is considered one of the earliest symbols of the Renaissance period.

Day 8- Return Home

Today say goodbye to this beautiful country. You will be transferred to Sofia airport with guide assistance for your flight home.
