Holiday highlights

Pinakotheken Art Museums

Three massive buildings housing some of the most important art collections in the world. The Alte Pinakothek contains a treasure trove of more than 800 paintings from the 14th to 18th centuries, including masterpieces by renowned painters like Frans Hals, Van Dyck, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Velazquez and El Greco. The Neue Pinakothek houses modern paintings and sculptures from the 19th century, and the Pinakothek der Moderne features contemporary art such as graphics, photography and video from the beginning of the 20th century to today.

Maximilian Street

Lined with mainly neo-gothic buildings, Maximilian Street is one of the city’s four royal avenues. This the ultimate luxury shopping destination, with jewellery shops, art galleries, luxury boutiques, and designer stores such as Prada, Gucci, Cartier, Omega and Louis Vuitton stretching the length of the street.

Hofbräuhaus am Platzl

originally built in 1589 as an extension of the Munich brewery, today the Hofbrauhaus is one of Munich’s main tourist attractions. If you pay a visit to the beer hall, you’ll be in good company – the Hofbrauhaus has welcomed Mozart, Louis Armstrong and Mikhail Gorbachev, as well as past American Presidents John F Kennedy and George W Bush.

Royal Palace

home to Bavarian royals for hundreds of years, this pretty building hides many opulent and ornate treasures within. The Antiquarium is the highlight – a long hall with beautiful ceilings and statues lining the walls. The treasury houses the collection of royal precious gems and metals.
