Cologne Christmas Markets

View Dates & Prices

This year, begin your festive season in style with a visit to Cologne’s sparkling Christmas Markets.

Germany’s fourth largest city spans the river Rhine and was founded almost 2000 years ago by the Romans. Hit hard by the Second World War, these days the city is uniquely characterised by the contrast between modern post-war architecture and its carefully and painstakingly re-built Old Town.

As well as enjoying a half-day guided city tour, during your stay you can choose from a selection of wonderful Christmas Markets of varying shapes and sizes across the city. Wander through the stalls selling gifts and crafts, festive food and hot beverages beside Cologne’s famous Gothic cathedral, or visit markets in the city’s Old Town, in the shopping district, the harbour area or Stadtgarten park. The choice is yours.

Holiday highlights

Cologne Old Town

Explore Cologne’s Old Town with its quaint alleyways, traditional German houses and great selection of pubs, restaurants and breweries. The Old Town is located along the River Rhine and visitors can explore the historic past of the area, with its many museums, monuments and historical remains, such as the Old St. Alban Memorial and the Archaeological Zone. At the centre of the Old Town, you will find Alter Markt and Heumarkt where you can relax and enjoy the atmosphere and dine in one of the area’s inviting restaurants and cafés.

Cologne Cathedral

Germany’s most visited landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cologne Cathedral is the largest Gothic church in all of Northern Europe, and is widely considered to be a masterpiece of that style of architecture. Construction began in 1248 and continued over seven centuries until its completion in 1880. The cathedral houses a number of works of art, the most famous of which is the Shrine of the Three Kings, a large guilded sarcophagus said to contain the bones of the Three Wise Men.

Alter Markt Square

Literally translating as “Old Market”, the Alter Markt has been a focal point in Cologne for centuries and was home to the city’s main marketplace during medieval times. These days, the square is full of cafés with outdoor terraces, making it the perfect spot to relax and take in the area’s lively atmosphere, overlooked by the beautiful tower of Cologne City Hall. During the festive season the Alter Markt is also the site of one of the city’s many popular Christmas Markets.

Cologne Christmas Markets

Cologne is home to some of Europe’s best Christmas Markets, the most famous of which can be found beneath Cologne Cathedral and is home to roughly 150 wooden market stalls. Here you’ll find a selection of sweet delicacies, regional specialities and traditional mulled wine, as well as gifts and crafts including wood carvings, glass balls, ceramics and children’s toys. Avid market-goers may also choose from excellent markets across the city, some of which can be found in the Old Town, the shopping district, the harbour area and Stadtgarten Park.
