Pamplona may be most famous for the Running of the Bulls, but there is far more to the city than the festival of San Fermin. Surrounded by mountains and lying on the west bank of the River Arga, Pamplona’s history dates all the way back to Roman times, and today it is still home to many impressive historic buildings and churches, as well as a medieval citadel and city walls, considered the best conserved fortifications in Spain.

As the capital of the Navarra region in North Eastern Spain, Pamplona is the perfect location from which to explore the fascinating Basque Country. Bordering France along the western Pyrenees and facing out onto the Bay of Biscay, the Basque region’s distinct culture, cuisine and language make it a unique and remarkable place to spend time.

On three full day included excursions, you will visit the vibrant city of Bilbao, home to the Guggenheim Museum; hop across the French border to the seaside resort of Biarritz; and discover the stunning coastal town of San Sebastian, often called the Pearl of Northern Spain.

Holiday highlights

Pamplona
Pamplona is the capital of northern Spain's Navarre province. It’s best known for it's famous Running of the Bulls festival (Fiesta de San Fermín). During this legendary multi-day festival in July, bulls are led through the city streets by daredevil runners. Pamplona is also a major stop along the Camino de Santiago, a medieval-era pilgrimage route, and home to Gothic-style churches including fortresslike San Nicolás.
The Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao
A fantastic museum of modern and contemporary art that is built alongside the Nervión river.
Biarritz
Biarritz, this elegant seaside town on southwestern France’s Basque coast, has been a popular resort since European royalty began visiting in the early 19th centuary. It’s also a major surfing destination, and its beaches host surf schools and an annual international competition. A busy nightlife scene encompasses late-night bars, clubs and a grand beachside casino, the Barrière.

Following some free time for lunch, you will continue your tour along the river Nervion. On the tour, the guide will tell you about the recent history and the economy of the city. Three famous architects have made a huge difference to the city of Bilbao; Frank Gehry designed the Guggenheim museum, Norman Foster designed the metro stations with the famous glass tubes at their entrances’ and Santiago Caltrava designed the airport and its unique white bridge – Zubizuri. All of these features, and a change in the outlook of the city have made it the biggest metropolitan area in the Basque Country and a very attractive place to visit. There will be the option to visit the Guggenheim museum or to enjoy some free time to explore the more modern quarter which the museum calls home.

Biarritz

Biarritz is a chic French resort on the Bay of Biscay, which has long made its fortune from the sea, as a whaling settlement from the 12th century onwards. In the 18th century, doctors claimed that the ocean at Biarritz had therapeutic properties inspiring patients to take pilgrimages to the beach for alleged cures for their ailments. As part of your tour, you will take a beautiful walk along the seaside promenade by the ‘Camino a la Roca de la Virgin’ and finish at a famous rock. You will also visit the fishing port and then walk to the city centre of Biarritz where you will see the Orthodox Church and go to a typical market called ‘Mercado Les Halles’. You will then have some free time at leisure before you make your way back over the border towards Bilbao to your hotel in Pamplona.

All of these features make San Sebastian a lovely place to visit and a great place to live for those who can afford it! Your guide will take you on a walking tour to include the famous Beach of La Concha, and the centre of the town, with beautiful 19th century French inspired architecture. This tour will conclude in the ‘Casco Viejo’, also known as the old quarter where all of the ‘pinxto’ bars are located and where there will be free time for lunch and some shopping.
