Holiday highlights

The Belem Tower

This tower is to Lisbon what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris or Big Ben is to London. It is the city's most photographed landmark, which along with the marvellous Jeronimos Monastery should top your list of must-see monuments.

Marques de Pombal
The square is the radiating point for various important avenues: Liberdade, Duque de Loulé and Fontes Pereira de Melo, as well as the streets Braamcamp and Joaquim António de Aguiar. In the middle of the roundabout there is a large column dedicated to Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo, built between 1917 and 1934.
Lisbon Cuisine
The country is full of specialty seafood restaurants, many with artistic displays of lobsters, shrimp, oysters, and crabs. To try a mixture of these, have the rich seafood rice, "arroz de marisco."
St. George's Castle ruins
Set at the top of the Moorish quarters of Alfama, St George's Castle provides a perfect panoramic view of the city. From here you can see the Santuario do Cristo Rei, a 110ft replica of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. You can also view the remains of the city cathedral which was destroyed, along with a great part of the rest of the city, in an earthquake in 1755. (Optional visit at your leisure).

Alfama
From the castle you can make your way back down the hill through Alfama, the oldest quarter of Lisbon. It is nice to wander through the winding streets and soak up the atmosphere, stopping off for a drink or a spot of shopping in one of the many gift shops. The area also retains a largely traditional life and as you wind through the alleys you'll pass many locals sitting on the doorsteps gossiping and watching the world go by. (Optional visit at your leisure).
