Embark on the quintessential great American road trip all the way from Chicago to L.A. Constructed in 1926, Route 66 became known as the “Main Street of America” or “The Mother Road”, as it wound through towns, trading posts and small communities across the United States. Originally a major trucking route for American agriculture, it also became the main road for migrants travelling from the Dust Bowl to California during the years of the Great Depression.

Officially removed from the US Highway System in 1985, the sections of the road that remain are now known as Historic Route 66.  It has become a symbol of American history and culture, featured in countless songs, films and television shows, and remains a popular path for travellers from around the world to this day.

Head out on the highway and drive from east to west across eight states, passing through the heart of America along the way. From the Windy City, you will travel through a diverse array of landscapes, from the fertile valleys of Missouri, the ranch lands of Texas, the woodlands and open plains of Oklahoma to the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico, all the way to the Pacific Coast.

Music lovers will revel in visiting Nashville, Memphis and Austin, while history buffs can enjoy a visit to a ghost town from the silver rush of the 1880s, the National Ranching Heritage Centre and the NASA facilities at the Johnson Space Centre. Continue to the sparkling city of Las Vegas and the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon, before finally arriving among the bright lights of L.A. If ever there was the journey of a lifetime, this is it.
