Let’s discover more of Italy on this guided holiday with a perfect combination of sightseeing and relaxation. Based in the picturesque town of Fiuggi, 60km southeast of Rome, we’ll be ideally placed to visit some of the most iconic sites in central Italy.

On guided tours of the 'Eternal City', we’ll take in famous landmarks like the Colosseum (viewed from the outside) and Trevi Fountain, and enjoy a memorable visit to the Vatican - viewing St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel.

We’ll also have free time to explore Rome independently, and our expert guide will provide tips on what to do depending on your interests. Another excursion takes us to the Umbrian towns of Spoleto  and Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis, one of the world's most cherished places of pilgrimage.

Coach transfer to and from Belfast (Chichester Street) to Dublin Airport on selected dates.

Food & Drink

From the humble trattoria to the grander ristorante, Rome offers a great choice of places to eat and drink. It’s worth noting the two-tier pricing system in bars and cafes; to eat or drink sitting down will cost more than standing up. On the bill for your sit-down meal, expect to pay Pane e Coperto (small charge for bread and ‘cover’).

Some Roman specialties to try; Bucatini all’Amatriciana (long pasta with tomato, cured pork cheek and Pecorino cheese), Saltimbocca (veal wrapped in cured ham), and Trippa alla Romana, slow cooked tripe in rich tomato sauce – more delicious than it sounds! Accompany your meal with a chilled Frascati, or the red Cesanase del Piglio, from the Lazio region.

Holiday highlights

Fiuggi

The enchanting hilltop town gained renown in the 1300s, when Pope Boniface VIII claimed his kidney stones had been healed by the mineral waters that gushed forth from the nearby Fiuggi spring.  At the foot of the hill, in the newer part of the town, you’ll see fine Liberty style architecture, leafy squares and green parks, as well as plenty of shops and cafes.

St. Peter's Basilica

This is the largest church in Christianity and the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. From the monumental colonnade by Bernini to Michelangelo’s Dome and his remarkable Pietà, St. Peter’s is one of Rome’s most memorable sights.

The Trevi Fountain

The spectacular Fontana di Trevi was completed by Nicola Salvi in 1762. It is located in the heart of Rome's historic centre in Trevi Square near the Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona.

Assisi

The Basilica dedicated to St. Francis, born here in 1181, consists of two churches and a crypt containing his tomb. The interior of the lower basilica is decorated with frescoes by some of the most important painters from 1200 to 1300, including Cimabue and Giotto. In the Upper Basilica, you can see the life cycle of St. Francis, in frescoes painted by Giotto.
