Before your Danube river cruise commences you will take a guided tour of Passau, the ‘City of Three Rivers’ and one of the oldest cities in Bavaria.

Ports of call with half-day guided city tours and free time sightseeing at leisure include Vienna,  Budapest, Bratislava and Melk. Plus there’s a full program of optional excursions available. 

During your European river cruise, you will be staying onboard the 4 Star MS Maxima, taking you right into the centre of the cities and allowing you more time to visit the attractions and enjoy your free time ashore.

The 5-night cruise during this holiday is full board; meals are served in the indoor Panorama restaurant on board the ship. In the middle of the day you can enjoy a generous lunch buffet in the Panorama restaurant. 

Evening meals are composed of multiple course menus featuring regional specialities as well as vegetarian dishes.

Coffee/tea is included after lunch and dinner.

Please note that alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are not included during meals, a beverage package can be booked optionally.

 

Embarkation and Disembarkation

You will have a guided transfer to the exact mooring at the port of embarkation, and will also be met at the disembarkation point at the end of your cruise. While the ship is moored at each port of call, you are free to disembark as you wish. Before leaving the ship independently, please note the mooring point and the onward sailing time. Embarkation or disembarkation times may vary on particular cruise schedules (as described in the itinerary).

 

Dress Code

There is no specific dress code on board, but it is recommended that you dress smartly for dinner. By day and for shore excursions it is recommended you wear layered clothing and comfortable shoes. It is advisable to take a pullover or jacket for cooler evenings.

 

Tipping

In common with international customs, it is normal but not obligatory to tip staff. The amount of your tip is left to your discretion and should be seen as a reward for good service. If you would like a recommendation we suggest, as a guideline, € 5-7 per guest per day.

Budapest

The ‘Pearl of the Danube’, Budapest is one of the most impressive cities in Europe. In 1873 the unification of the cities Buda and Pest, on opposite sides of the river, meant Budapest became one city. The top sights to see in Budapest are Hungary’s parliament building, the gothic castle of Buda, the beautiful Crown Bridge and the Dohany Synagogue, the second largest in the world.

Vienna

The capital of Austria and the World’s Capital of Music, the city is rich with history and many famous people have lived in Vienna including Mozart, Beethoven, Sigmund Freud and Leon Trotsky. On your walking tour of Vienna, you’ll see amazing sights, such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Hofburg Imperial Palace, Belvedere Palace and the world-famous Vienna State Opera. Experience an important part of Austrian culture by enjoying a drink or a sweet treat in one of the many coffee houses in Vienna. 

Bratislava

Located in Slovakia, close to both the Hungarian and Austrian borders, and surrounded by the picturesque Little Carpathian Mountains and vineyards, Bratislava can easily be explored by foot. Discover Bratislava’s charming old town with its Gothic-Baroque style as well as other interesting sights such as St. Martin’s Cathedral, Grassalkovich Palace, the old City Hall, the Opera House and Maximilian Fountain. To get incredible views of the city, visit the 9th century Bratislava Castle.

Trip Itinerary - Day by day

Day 1 - Travel to Germany

Morning

Travel to Germany

Travel this morning to Germany. Upon arrival in Munich, you will be met by your local guide who will assist you in the transfer to Passau port. A guided Passau city tour will be provided en-route. The old town, created by Italian baroque masters in the 17th century, showcases the city’s soaring towers, picturesque places, enchanting promenades and romantic lanes. Take in highlights such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral, in which the world’s largest cathedral organ sounds, the majestic riverside fortress Veste Oberhaus and the Pilgrimage Church "Mariahilf".

Afternoon

Commence your River Cruise

In the afternoon, you will be transferred to Passau port to join your River Cruise. Settle in to your cabin and explore the range of facilities on board your ship as you embark on your 5-night cruise along the Danube. Sit back with a welcome cocktail in one of the lounge areas, followed by a tasty welcome dinner.

Day 2 - Vienna

Afternoon

Vienna City Tour

This afternoon, after spending the morning cruising along the Danube, you will embark on an included city tour of Vienna. This tour will give you an overall impression of the most important sights Vienna has to offer. First you will drive along the famous Ringstrasse, passing several magnificent buildings like the stunning opera house, the parliament, the Court Theatre and Vienna’s imposing city hall. The tour is followed by a guided walk through the city centre where you will get to know Vienna at its finest. You will start at the well-known Hofburg Imperial Palace, walk along the Kohl market and finish at Vienna’s iconic St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Before returning to the ship you will have some free time to explore at your own pace.

Evening

Optional Beer Brewery Excursion

An optional tour of a beer brewery with a beer-tasting session will be offered in the late afternoon (payable locally). The ship will depart Vienna in the late evening.

Day 3 - Budapest

Afternoon

Budapest City Tour

After docking into Budapest port after lunch, you will be escorted on an included guided tour of the historic centre. Take in highlights such as Heroes Square, the Synagogue and the Castle District. Walk by the Ottoman styled St Mathias Church and Fishermen’s Bastion for photo opportunities and visit St. Stephan’s Basilica

Evening

At Leisure

You will have the rest of the day at leisure to further explore this fascinating city at your own pace or partake in the optional “Budapest by Night” excursion (payable locally).

Day 4 - Bratislava

Afternoon

Bratislava City Tour

You will arrive in Bratislava in the early afternoon. The city is small and best explored on foot and during your walking tour you will get to know the capital of the young Slovakian Republic. The gorgeous old town has maintained its Gothic-Baroque style. The tour passes St. Martin’s Cathedral and the Grassalkovich Palace and continues up to the hill where you will have a stunning panoramic view of the city and surrounding areas. Afterwards, you have the opportunity to participate in a guided walking tour through the restored old town. From Michael’s Gate you will take a leisurely stroll through the historic city centre where you can admire sights such as the Primatial Palace and St. Martin’s Cathedral, a former coronation cathedral for Hungarian kings, as well as the Academia Istropolitana, the oldest university of the city, which dates back to the 15th century. In addition to numerous palaces, you will also walk past the main square with the old City Hall, the Opera House and Maximilian Fountain.

Day 5 - Melk

Full Day

Optional Melk Abbey Excursion

Today you will wake up in Melk where you can enjoy an optional excursion to Melk Abbey (payable locally). Melk Abbey is an Austrian Benedictine abbey and one of the world’s most famous monastic sites. The impressive Baroque abbey was built between 1702 and 1736 and is the biggest monastery complex of the Austrian baroque period. The Abbey’s church features frescos by Johann Michael Rottmayr and the impressive library contains countless medieval manuscripts and frescos by Paul Troger. A guided tour takes you through the abbot’s chambers, along the Imperator’s walk, through the marble hall, the balconies and the library.

Day 6 - Munich & Return home

Morning

Munich City Tour

It is time to say goodbye after a full week of delights aboard your cruise vessel. You will be met by our local representative and transferred to Munich to enjoy a morning city tour. Highlights will include the Nymphenburg Palace, King's Square with its three temple buildings in the classical Greek style, the Bavarian National Museum, the Angel of Peace monument, the elegant buildings and shops along Maximilian Street, the Maximilianeum, the National Opera House, the Royal Palace, Stachus Square and the medieval city gates.

Afternoon

Munich and Return Home

After some free time for further sightseeing or shopping in Munich, you will be transferred to Munich airport for your flight home, with guide assistance. (Luggage will be stored in coach)
